We're building an ed tech startup called Quume, which stands for Accumulated IQ. Quume is dedicated to helping professionals own their professional development and learning while leveraging their lifelong learning. Think of Quume as your 401(k) for your intellectual capital. The co-founders are two individuals with strong backgrounds in higher education, strategic consulting, and HR. We are also recent graduates of the Founder Institute (DC Fall 2012). We have the following:
- A strong, validated concept incubated through the Founder Institute
- a good network, including connections to local VCs firms, entrepreneurs, CEOs, senior university administrators, and senior HR professionals.
- A dedicated advisory board that includes a CEO of a successful ed tech company, VP of HR of a Fortune 50, and a v. senior university admin.
- A business req doc, mockups, and the beginning of a code base (in Node.js)
- Self-funding of $50k
Build a working prototype
Lead technical development
Make strategic decisions
Recruit and lead a high performing dev team
Seeking an individual passionate about learning and development, and helping others reach their potential (that's our mission)
Experience developing consumer web applications optimized for high-traffic loads
Experience developing application logic for large dynamic websites, designing and implementing web service APIs, and designing and implementing robust data architectures
Above all, you need to be a full stack developer with some meaningful design experience. We are a startup and this is essential (and non-negotiable). You need to have an obsessive attention to detail and user experience. Ideally, your technical skills would be the following:
Application programming Expertise: Node/Ruby/ Python, AJAX, Web Services (RSS, REST, SOAP, XML-RPC, etc.). Advocate for the appropriate use of SAAS, design patterns, frameworks, SOA, ORM, and MVC.
Database Expertise: MSSQL/MySQL – Relational database design and programming, stored procedures, triggers, reporting, and administration.
Design expertise: Some design experience using Adobe Illustrator, Fireworks, InDesign, and Photoshop, with strong UI/Layout, Balsamiq/ Omnigraffle mockup skills.
Server Expertise: IIS, Apache, URL Rewrites, security, certificates, load balancing, etc.
While these are not absolutes, they should serve as a general basis in what we are looking for. Also, we’re looking for someone passionate about what we’re doing and one who believes in our idea - to provide professionals with the confidence and skills to have meaningful careers.
Please apply if you have the experience but not the formal credentials. It would go against our ethos to say/do otherwise.
We are a self-funded start-up seeking our A-round of investor financing. Therefore, there will be an equity offer, and when Quume is funded (4 months), there will be salary and options as well.
We have done the heavy lifting during our incubation period at Founder Institute (Oct 2012 - Feb 2013). We have the idea, the plan, the trademark, legal representation, and, most importantly, customer validation through hundreds of customer interviews. We also have a business requirements docs, mockups, and the beginnings of a code base (written in Node, though that can change). All we need now is someone that can initially build a working prototype. We have $50,000 in self-funding and we plan to raise $200,000 in seed funding by August 2013. We could do raise a round much sooner depending on how quickly the chosen candidate can work. That being said the following is available to the right candidate:
• 5 - 10% equity in the company (based on experience)
• $50k-$75k/year salary once we obtain funding (target: Aug 2013)
• Ground floor opportunity and voice in shaping the company – you will be the third employee and our link to the technological aspect of the business, your input will be valuable
• Build a team – we have plans to hire at a minimum 2 more engineers once funded with many more to follow and you will be hand selecting your team
Lastly, understand that we are a pair of intense and passionate individuals. We have an idea and model that has been incubated through a rigorous program. We also have an impressive advisory board that includes the CEO of a local ed tech company, a VP of HR in a Fortune 50 company, and a university president. However, until we have a prototype to bring to life what we have on paper, we cannot move forward.
