A problem in desperate need of a new approach. The consumer problem in insurance is deceptively simple: insurance is hard to sell because people don’t want to think about bad things like death and illness. Insurers just throw money at the problem: advertising, hefty commissions, pushy sales agents. We’re introducing a new approach.
We’re looking to build our team with people who understand the importance of what we’re doing and want to apply their talent and energy to solving a Big Problem. Foundation Building - No more working with outdated languages, poorly architected systems, and legacy code. You'll be able to learn from your past experiences, and those of your network/community, to map and build KnowItOwl's technical base. We'll be working with you to determine what languages we'll be harnessing (and why), what frameworks to involve (or steer clear of), and best practices for setting up the wonderful OCD-esque underpinnings of our development process.
Mind Reading/Future Prediction - You'll be answering the tough questions around how our systems scale 6, 12, and 18 months out. This includes integrating with data sources from within the industry and enabling our algorithms to shift as the data demands.
Picture Making/ Analytics Wrangling - As you design the foundation, processes, and scalable systems behind KnowItOwl you'll be putting on your deep analytics hat. As part of KnowItOwl's data insights pillar you'll be planning and executing database structures and interfaces that allow the team to create accurate pictures and extrapolate REAL meaning from the info we're collecting. End result: REAL impact for consumers and insurers across the industry.
Mythbusters: Tech Edition - We'll be relying on you to support or smash concepts and strategies we've included in our product roadmap. You'll be responsibly for the if it CAN happen, how it SHOULD happen, and of course the WHEN.
An interest in the business and broader company vision (clearly...)
Love of software design patterns
Understanding of user-centered design/development
Experience with unit testing, acceptance testing and familiarity with git/svn version control
An opinion on the technology solutions for a scalable consumer insurance business model
Hands-on experience coding in more than one currently popular web application framework.
Familiar with more than one software development methodology.
Ability to discern user requirements and develop specifications.
Has contributed to one or more open source projects.
Knowledge of web standards.
Familiarity with technical requirements of Internet marketing and search engine optimization.
Familiarity with information security vulnerabilities and risk management.
Familiarity with consumer privacy and payments industry compliance requirements.
