Overview
The Manufacturing Project Engineer is a key technical role responsible for the implementation and management of all manufacturing projects. With strong focus on cost savings project management, capital project creation, development and implementation of best practices, and continuous product improvement.
Founded in 2009, Brooklyn-based MakerBot has grown to be a global leader in desktop 3D printing. MakerBot had 16 percent market share of all 3D printers (industrial and personal) made from 2009 to the end of 2011. In 2011, MakerBot had 21.6 percent market share. In 2012, MakerBot estimates that it now has a 25 percent market share of the 3D printer market. There are more than 15,000 MakerBot Desktop 3D Printers in use by engineers, designers, researchers, and people who just like to make things. The MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printer has been named Popular Mechanics “Overall Winner” for best 3D printer and was honored as one of Time Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2012. In addition, MakerBot was named “Best Emerging Tech” at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show, won Popular Mechanics Editor’s Choice Award, the Popular Science Product of the Year, and recently was awarded the Fast Company 2012 Innovation by Design Award as well as being named by Fast Company as “One of the World’s Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Consumer Electronics.” And MakerBot was recently awarded a TechCrunch Crunchies Award for best hardware start-up. Responsibilities
Develops project objectives by reviewing project proposals and plans; conferring with management.
Determines project responsibilities by identifying project phases and elements; assigning personnel to phases and elements; reviewing bids from contractors.
Determines project specifications by studying product design, customer requirements, and performance standards; completing technical studies; preparing cost estimates.
Confirms product performance by designing and conducting tests.
Determines project schedule by studying project plan and specifications; calculating time requirements; sequencing project elements.
Maintains project schedule by monitoring project progress; coordinating activities; resolving problems.
Controls project plan by reviewing design, specifications, and plan and schedule changes; recommending actions.
Prepares project status reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends; recommending actions.
Maintains project database; entering and backing up data.
Executes process improvement plans using a variety of Quality and Continuous Process Improvement tools, including but not limited to MTM, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, 5S, SPC, engineering studies, DOE, and Gauge R&R.
Support production in 8D responses and regular quality resolution update meetings, including writing problem investigation reports and reviewing supplier corrective actions.
Calculates production, labor, and material cost, reviewing production schedules and estimating future requirements.
Recommend and implement continual improvement initiatives relative to performance and product KPIs.
Reports daily to Operations groups.
Maintains product and company reputation by complying with government regulations; develops, implements and champions manufacturing safety initiatives
Analyze customer complaints and field failures. Coordinates corrective action, follow-up and reporting.

Experience
3-5 years’ experience on a manufacturing team with a background in project development and manufacturing quality
Knowledge of hardware specifications, manufacturing methods and procedures, plastics and/or sheet-metal manufacturing, and packaging.
Ability to present technical information and effectively communicate within all levels of the organization around; design verification and validation activities, production & process controls, Corrective & Preventive Action (CAPA), consumer complaints, and product improvement activities.
Understands use of hand tools in assembly lines, ergonomics and safety
Engineering degree, MS or MBA a plus
Lean, Six Sigma, TQM and JIT experience a plus
Participation in ISO 9001 or similar quality programs a plus
Experience with appliance, automotive or electromechanical device manufacturing a plus
Excellent people skills, 'on the shop floor' attitude, hands on
Experience with ERP and/or inventory management systems
Background Supervising groups of people
Demonstrated understanding of product development lifecycles, design change and document change control, product and process verification and validation methodologies, and manufacturing / production process control methodologies.
Change agent with energy, passion, and enthusiasm to drive change.
External Focus: Understanding customer needs, industry trends, and the competitive landscape in the industry.
