A growing number of Quirky’s products are wireless, smartphone app enabled, or they move around with digital intelligence.
You’ll participate in early brainstorming discussions and product concept reviews to provide a perspective on what features should be considered in the design. Your engineering knowledge comes from prior products you’ve shipped along with a constant curiosity to evaluate new dev boards, modules, reference designs, and technologies.
As a product idea takes shape, you’re comfortable quickly iterating on proof-of-concept prototypes. These prototypes will help the team evaluate risk, build a development schedule, and determine market interest in the product.
In execution mode, you’ll drive component selection, draw-up schematics, and participate in the peer-review of other designs from the team. You will then take your design through to PCB layout. With each PCB rev, you’ll be instrumental in board bring-up and debugging.
After a year at Quirky, you’ll be able to walk through a major retail store and point to a dozen products that you helped bring to market.
5+ years experience in embedded hardware design – preferably in consumer products
A history of reliable, shipping products
Both 8 and 32-bit embedded design experience
Experience interfacing sensors and subsystems over I2C, SPI, DMA, UARTs, and USB.
Proficient with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, communication bus scopes, etc.
Will take concepts through initial schematic design and PCB layout/routing. (Altium Designer experience a plus)
Prior experience doing PCB layout that isolates power zones and minimizes noise/interference.
Comfortable context switching between a simple 8-bit design to complex 32-bit projects with wireless technologies, displays, or embedded Linux – all in the same week.
Ability to advise firmware engineers on low-level driver requirements to interface with displays, audio systems, wireless modules, or even motors.
Unrelenting curiosity and pride in building awesome products.
Can interface with overseas manufacturing partners (ODMs or contract manufacturers) – with travel to these sites as necessary.
High-speed memory bus interfacing
Antenna selection and placement in wireless designs (PCB or chip antennas, vs external)
Prior projects that you’ve taken through FCC, CE, and EMI testing.
Experience interfacing with Camera CCDs, Displays, or RF/Wireless modules
Prior hardware designs using Android as the device operating system.
Demonstrated focus on power-sipping designs.
Prior experience with Altium Designer for PCB layout.
