The Role:
You know that quote from Field of Dreams, “If you build it, he will come”? Well, that’s so yesterday. What’s applicable here and now is “(S)he will come and build it.” Yeah, that’s right; we’re talking about you! ModCloth.com wants you, Ruby engineering master, to come and help build out our infrastructure! You’ll join a fun-loving group of people—from photographers and writers, to engineers and analysts—and tackle complex and challenging development tasks that will play a huge part in helping ModCloth realize its mission of shaking up the social commerce industry.
What You’ll Be Doing:
As a Senior Ruby Engineer, you’ll brandish your Ruby proficiency and Rails framework skills to help design the Empire State Building of system architecture. Throughout your work, you’ll share your excitement about agile development philosophy, test-driven development, and short iterations as you pair with your teammates and work alongside business analysts, systems analysts, and user-experience designers. Plus, you’ll be able to unleash your intelligence as you do high-level thinking about object-oriented design and infrasturture for a site that’s growing at light speed.
Responsibilities
Use your frighteningly great talent to develop ModCloth infrastructure using Ruby, Ruby on Rails, MySQL, and a slew of common open source supplemental technologies like Rack, RSPec, Jasmine, Cucumber, Solr, etc.
Learn and break up a large monolithic legacy Rails application into small, testable, and well-designed functional units
Embrace your love of collaboration by pair programming full-time
Employ test-driven and behavior-driven development
Lend the QA team a hand with testing and delivering quick feedback on bug reports
Support continuous integration by ensuring that working branches pass all tests
Participate in daily stand-ups, sprint planners, reviews, retrospectives, and the occasional ping-pong game
Experience
Know how to show Ruby language and Rails framework who’s boss
Familiarity with object-oriented design, design patterns, and how they apply to Ruby
Is a ‘Ruby meta-programming whisper.’ a.k.a. knows it like the back of their hand and can articulate where it’s appropriate
Impressive understanding of SQL and data modeling for scalability and performance
Formidable XHTML/CSS/JavaScript and MVC framework experience
A fan of using and contributing to open source
Able to compare various languages and frameworks objectively
Has an eye for good design and ability to implement ‘pixel perfect’ UI designs
Knows agile development practices, thinks they’re awesome, and is excited to use them
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ablity to clearly articulate design ideas while being receptive to constructive criticism
Skills
Familiarity with Git version control system
Knowledge of Solr, Redis, MySQL
Experience with high-performance Rails applications
Experience with Sinatra, Rack, and services layer in Ruby
Previous TDD and pairing experience
Senior Java engineers with strong TDD experience and some exposure to Ruby/Rails will be considered.
