We’re setting out to build a better Internet based on what people think. That might sound like a lofty goal, but we have a ground-breaking idea and the technical muscle to back it up. We’ve been working on the site for more than two years, and we’re getting ready to share what we’ve made with millions of potential users.
State was founded by Alex Asseily (co-founder of Jawbone) and his brother Mark (ex-Skype and Rebtel). We have some incredible advisors on board, ranging from Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the Web, to Imran Amed, founder of Business of Fashion.
We're expanding our core engineering team and looking for a senior permanent Ruby developer.
In this role you’ll be developing core back-end components and larger features, as well as contributing to the core architecture of the system.
Creating a global opinion network involves solving problems that are both conceptually and technically hard, so you’ll need a mix of experience including engineering and scaling for a high-volume web platform and working with big data systems and algorithms in areas such as machine learning, data mining and natural language.
You've used Ruby and Rails in a commercial environment and you're very knowledgeable about the common frameworks and libraries
You have experience with a consumer internet service that has seen fast growth or high volume
You’re an experienced software engineer across multiple programming languages and have worked in a team; familiar with git, agile development practices, code reviews
You can go beyond coding of individual components into architecture and product design: you’ve worked on a large-scale service where you’ve had to figure out architectural, scaling and infrastructure issues.
You can talk about examples where you’ve dealt with conceptually difficult product issues, tricky technical work and significant performance challenges
Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB
Bonus: Specific experience with recommender systems, machine learning, information retrieval, text processing / computational linguistics , NLP would all help
Strong academic background in computer science or similarly mathematical/scientific discipline (typically Masters-level)
