Software Engineer (Ruby on Rails)

at Lookout in San Francisco, CA   —   Apr 09, 2014   |
Overview
We are passionate about creating useful, usable, and technologically game-changing software. Together, our disruptive technology and your work will be instrumental in helping people all over the world do more with their device, and do it safely. You’ll find yourself among engineers who are consistently pushing the edge and solving unprecedented problems in data analysis, reverse hacking, high performance computing, web crawling, massive scalability, cross platform development, and much more. We’re growing fast and have lots of opportunities for both greenhorn and senior engineers alike.

About the Role:

We’re a small team working on a very large, modern system with a user base of millions, so you’ll get to work on a cutting-edge product and service on a large scale. Our flat organizational structure and small development team provide you with the opportunity to work on sizable projects that really matter. We’re built on an open stack top to bottom, and contribute to various open source projects. We have one of the largest Rails implementations out there, and it’s only increasing in scale. Our hybrid dedicated/cloud environment is comprised of both physical hardware and EC2 instances to service different layers of the stack.

Lookout’s backend system sustains a massive volume of data and an increasingly high level of demand, from data ingestion to delivery to dynamic analysis. What do we mean by massive volume and demand? Millions of devices connecting each day, billions of full-stack requests per month, managing petabytes of data. Our service handles collaborative anti-malware scanning with smartphones and provides constant support to mobile clients in the field, enabling users to receive real-time threat protection, backup and restore their data, and find and protect their lost devices. We’re looking for exceptional engineers to help us build and evolve our highly reliable and responsive service at an ever increasing scale.

Why Lookout?

Besides building something meaningful, here’s why you’ll love working here:
• We’re a small company: it’s fun, dynamic, open, collaborative, and you will make a difference.
• You’ll have the ability to work directly with people who lead the industry – which is pretty cool!
• We work in the heart of SOMA in San Francisco, walking distance from Caltrain, MUNI, and BART.
• We’re funded by top-tier venture and angel investors who have helped build companies such as Skype, Facebook, Admob, PayPal, Foursquare, Dropbox, Juniper, Vontu, and Symantec.
