Web Back-End Software Engineer

at Wikia in San Francisco, CA   —   Apr 17, 2014   |
Overview
Mid to Senior Level

We are looking for smart, quick and highly motivated software engineers to join our growing and profitable company.

You will be part of the team scaling Wikia’s industry leading platform. We are globally distributed, fanatical about performance and growing quickly. We have interesting scaling and back-end implementation opportunities to design and solve.

We are located in the heart of San Francisco’s SOMA near public transit (CalTrain, BART) and the ballpark.
Experience
We have openings at several levels, from roughly 3 years experience to 20+ year veterans.
Excellent software engineering skills and judgment. You live to deliver high-quality excellent software products to end-users.
PHP experience strongly preferred but not strictly required
You have scaled a web site before, preferably multiple times. You must have been involved in a site serving at least 1M pages / day. You consider 10M pages / day a traffic level where things start to get interesting, and view 100M pages / day as an interesting challenge.
Some of your experience must be in small, fast-moving high-growth teams.
Excellent communication skills. We are a growing international team – your ability to understand and be understood will be critical to your success and satisfaction.
Hard-working and pro-active. Passionate. Team-oriented. Motivated to do whatever is necessary to make a successful start-up even more successful.
You will work with both San Francisco and Poland-based teams. You view international teams as an opportunity to learn from different cultures and approaches, and are willing to travel to Europe occasionally.
Skills
We don’t expect anyone to have all of these skills, but the more the better.
Experience tuning and scaling databases, preferably MySQL.
Experience with queuing and messaging systems, e.g. Scribe, Rabbit, theSchwartz.
Experience with multiple data center deployments.
Experience with Varnish.
Experience contributing to or
Education
Degree in CS or related discipline
