UX-driven Web Designer in San Francisco

GameLayers, Inc. is a venture-funded game company looking for a UE-driven web designer to help us make a massively multiplayer game out of daily web surfing. GameLayers, Inc. produces the Passively Multiplayer Online Game: PMOG. PMOG has been featured in Wired, Technology Review, Edge magazine, The Guardian Online, TechCrunch, and numerous other online and print publications.

Our PMOG mission is to make an MMO that integrates with the web browser. We need a web designer who understands intuitive controls, who can guide a player’s attention, and create everything from video game-inspired head-up displays to clean, fun web pages.

Skills needed: ability to write valid, semantically correct HTML; deep knowledge of CSS; use of Subversion or other version control systems; Photoshop/Illustrator fluency; and microformat and AJAX familiarity.

This position reports to the Chief Creative Officer.

View full job description | View company profile

PMOG, The Passively Multiplayer Online Game in San Francisco

GameLayers is looking for developers to help us continue building the most popular MMO in Firefox, PMOG.

As a result of building a data-driven game out of the open web, we're facing some exciting challenges. The PMOG web application makes use of an API to talk to a Firefox extension, and we're looking to build this into a fully-fledged API that will let our rapidly expanding player-base take the game in whatever direction they see fit. We have already seen a number of high quality, yet unofficial add-ons built for PMOG, so we know the demand is there. Come and work with us and you could build a really useful API!

Whilst PMOG is an asynchronous web game, with more passive than active elements, we're still keen to explore ways of making PMOG a much more realtime based game. Our current setup would probably fall into a problem we've been calling the 'Uncanny Valley of Responsiveness', where the game is not quite realtime enough to be convincing. Would you like to work with us to turn every installed Firefox extension into a realtime capable client, giving us a good sense of player presence?

Alternatively, if you have experience of dealing with the large volumes of data generated by a high traffic website, then you'll have some sense of the volume of data that PMOG generates. We're looking for people to make sense of all that data, and to find exciting uses for it within the PMOG world, without compromising on security. Come and work with us if you're the kind of person who would thrive in an environment where there is a huge amount of data available to be mined and used for game design.

If you have experience of writing successful web applications in Ruby, Python, PHP or Java and the above challenges sound exciting, then we'd love to hear from you.

View full job description | View company profile

XHTML/CSS/Ajax lead for game company in San Francisco

GameLayers is seeking a rockstar Web Developer to join our team
in San Francisco.

GameLayers is an award nominated game studio creating
new ways for people to interact and enjoy games.

We are a small team of six, so you will be responsible for owning
and help lead the implementation of our current and upcoming games.
This person will have a large voice in ideas, design
and features of our multiplayer online games.

The ideal candidate not only can make HTML/CSS and Javascript
sit up and beg, but is an avid gamer, online and off. You
can rattle off cross browser incompatibilities, can make a perfect
3 column-layout in your sleep, and have a flair for knowing
how to build a user-friendly interface. If you have an aptitude across
the stack, we'll probably love you even more.

Our site is in Ruby on Rails, and you either know it, or
would love to take this as an opportunity to add it to
your repertoire. You won't be coding in the backend, but
you'll need to dip in to see how things work so you don't have
to wait for help.

You are a problem solver, love a challenge, and can function
with minimal direction while never losing sight of the team
and its goals. This is not a designer position, this is for someone
that can get to work on day 1 and help us in the code. But design
skills are always a bonus!

And of course you love to play games!

No offshore or remote.
No recruiters.

View full job description | View company profile
