Systems Engineer in New York

Description:

* Design, implement, and maintain a scalable, Linux-based infrastructure for Tumblr's needs and future growth.
* Manage and administer all current and future servers and network devices.
* Maintain relationships with CDN and web-service partners.
* Diagnose and resolve performance issues.
* Maintain proper backups and security.
* Maintain operation and backups of multiple MySQL servers.

Requirements:

* Real-world experience with high-traffic, scalable web technologies and infrastructure for the LAMP stack.
* Experience administering multiple Linux servers in a production environment.
* Ability to diagnose and repair hardware and software issues for Linux servers.
* Expert command of English and strong communication skills.
* U.S. citizenship, or the permanent, legal right to work in the U.S.
* Residence in or near New York City, or the ability and willingness to move here. No telecommuting.

Pluses:

* Knowledge of MySQL performance issues, bottlenecks, and optimization.
* Ability to administer MySQL replication.

The only significant components we're tied to are PHP and MySQL. The rest are up to you. We currently use dedicated hosting, so you will initially not be responsible for physically maintaining hardware (but we are open to exploring alternatives). You will work closely with our development team to coordinate the interaction between the application and your infrastructure. You get to decide how our infrastructure will scale, and we'll give you the freedom, authority, and budget to do it properly.

* Real-world web programming experience on a public-facing application.
* Expert command of PHP and HTML.
* Proficiency in SQL, Javascript, CSS, HTTP behavior, and version control.
* A demonstrable knowledge of core computer science concepts, such as algorithmic complexity and concurrency.
* Ability and enthusiasm to learn and adopt new languages, libraries, and technologies as needed.
* Good taste for how web applications should behave.
* Familiarity with Tumblr.
* Expert command of English and strong communication skills.
