Data Analysis Specialist in San Francisco

Grockit (www.grockit.com) is a venture-funded web startup in San Francisco building a platform for — and a community around — live collaborative learning games. We offer an online test prep and collaborative learning tool that allows students to practice tests in the three ways they naturally study - alone, with peers, and with experts. We strive to provide our growing global network of learners with a smart platform informed by educational research, peer assistance, and data analysis.

We are currently looking for a data analysis specialist to join the team. We're looking to hire someone who's excited about the challenges and opportunities of doing hands-on data analysis for our web application. We're particularly interested in candidates who have experience with statistics and visualization packages (we use R heavily), web analytics (we're already doing split testing, cohort analysis, funnel analysis, etc), and general SQL skills.

This position will engage in data analysis for several members of the team, including the CEO (for business analytics), the development team (about optimizing SQL queries for our production application), and the R&D lead (on educational data mining projects.) Reports to the R&D lead.

Development methodologies:
We're what Grockit consultant Eric Ries calls a "lean startup": We're serious about customer development and about using experimentation to validate our learning, and these help inform our decision-making process. Split-testing and post-hoc exploratory data analysis are both a part of our code-base and our company culture. Our development team engages in an Agile/XP process, which includes daily "stand up" meetings, weekly "retrospectives", pair programming (doesn't apply to the data analysis position), which all lead to a close-knit collaboration among Grockit team members.

Work environment:
We surround ourselves with effective tools and an effective physical space. We use the latest Apple hardware (including Mac Pros with 30″ Cinema Displays.) Our loft in The Mission is beautiful, filled with fresh air and natural light from skylights and huge windows. And while there are great places to eat nearby, we consider our own kitchen to the greatest. Jacob, our chef/ops team member, feeds us two healthy meals a day, allowing us to spend time bonding "outside" of work while eating fantastic food together.

Senior Ruby Developers in San Francisco

Grockit Inc. is hiring full time senior level Ruby developers to help develop a unique online game from our San Francisco loft.

Grockit is agile. Not in the biz-dev-speak sort of way, but in the agile development, extreme programming, Kent Beck sort of way.

Coding is a creative endeavor bearing the fingerprint of the entire team; quality code flows out of an environment that encourages effective communication and free expression, simplicity, trust, respect, and courage.

In practice, we conduct daily morning standups that allow us to share what we accomplished the day before and and our goals for today. We spin-off conversations afterwards on ideas that were inspired the standup meeting.

We pair program every day. We take advantage of the collective and unique human experiences of two individuals working towards the same goal. As a pair, we don’t write a single line of production code without first expressing the problem and our expectations of what we’re going to solve with a descriptive test. As we do so, we learn from each other, and turn something ambiguous into an actionable set of specifications. We then write the simplest code possible to satisfy the tests, and then refactor the code if needed.

Along the way we produce a well maintained and comprehensive test suite that we can trust.

We maintain a sustainable pace so that we can maintain the creative process consistently every day.

Senior Web Designer in San Francisco

Your initial focus will be to develop a unique and consistent style for everything Grockit produces, including the web site, stickers, t-shirts, event fliers, buttons, icons, typefaces, color guides, mascots, mugs, clothing, etc….

You should have significant design experience and an awesome portfolio. If you’re green, it’s all about the portfolio.

As the production design needs wane, your focus will shift towards growing as a designer. We’ll encourage you to further your craft by speaking at design conferences, mentoring others, working on experimental projects, or whatever helps you become a better designer.

Our space in the mission district has been designed to be a relaxing and comfortable place to write beautiful code.
