Embedded Controls Engineer Internship in Cambridge

Altaeros Energies seeks a dynamic engineering student to work on the hardware and software design for the embedded controls system on its groundbreaking Airborne Wind Turbine (AWT). The Altaeros AWT uses a buoyant shroud adapted from proven aerospace technology to lift a traditional wind turbine a few hundred meters in the air, harnessing winds over five times as strong as those at ground level. The company is presently finalizing its designs for a 2.5 kW proof-of-concept prototype that is scheduled to deploy this fall. The position will initially focus on the hardware-in-the-loop testing of the complete autonomous control system, including the microcontrollers, sensors, and winch system. The engineer will be expected to use these test results to improve and finalize the printed circuit board (PCB) designs for our 2.5 kW prototype. This work will culminate with the assembly of the complete system and testing of the prototype. Following this testing, the engineer will have the opportunity to use test data and experiences to make improvements to our dynamic system model, control algorithm, and instrumentation.
The internship will start immediately and will extend through the fall. The internship will last a minimum of 10 wks and include equity compensation. The ideal candidate would have the flexibility to periodically travel to work at the company test site in Maine. Altaeros is particularly interested in meeting candidates that wish to remain involved as the company develops and pursue work on a part-time or full-time basis after the fall ends.

Altaeros Energies is an early-stage, seed-funded company working to bring the first airborne wind turbine to market. Altaeros turbines hold the potential to deliver cheap renewable energy to rural, island, and offshore sites that face high electricity costs. Founded in 2010 by MIT & Harvard alumni with a background in aerospace, energy, and industrial gases, Altaeros was a finalist in the Renewables Track of the 2010 MIT Clean Energy Prize, and is currently a finalist in the 2011 MassChallenge competition as well as a semifinalist in the 2011 Clean Tech Open. Altaeros was awarded a 2011 USDA SBIR grant and the company was selected to showcase at the 2011 Department of Energy ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit. Altaeros Energies is located in Boston, MA. If interested, please email your CV and a one paragraph statement of interest to Chris Vermillion at jobs@altaerosenergies.com.

View full job description | View company profile

Experimental Data Analysis and Model Validation Intern in Cambridge

Altaeros Energies seeks an engineer to assume a key role in developing data analysis and model validation software for use on our summer 2013 prototype and subsequent systems. The summer 2013 prototype is intended to demonstrate extended, high-wind performance, compared with Altaeros’ first prototype, flown in the winter of 2012 (see a short demo video at www.altaerosenergies.com).
The engineer will be responsible for designing software from which a user can (1) easily and quickly visualize and report on large amounts of flight test data and (2) feed meteorological data into our 6 degree-of-freedom dynamic model to compare the model’s predicted behavior to that which is observed in flight. This will require the creation of a MATLAB GUI that allows a user to interface with the model and data. Furthermore, in order to generate a valid model prediction, it will be necessary for the data analysis software to generate accurate initial conditions based on measured and inferred data at the start of any selected time window. Thus, the development of a robust data analysis system will require some dynamic modeling know-how, in addition to solid programming skills.

The internship will last a minimum of 12 weeks, and compensation will be based on experience. The position will consist of travel to and on-site work at Altaeros’ test site.

View full job description | View company profile
