Senior Data Scientist - Analytics and Software Engineering in New York

Birchbox (http://birchbox.com), is looking for a data scientist who is a great software engineer – or a great software engineer who really knows statistics and machine learning – to work on data-driven tasks, including:

Monthly box personalization: tailoring the selection of samples sent to each Birchbox subscriber
Full-size product recommendation: based on purchasing history, samples received, profile and browsing data, etc.
Analytics for brand partners
Insights to inform major product and business decisions
Improvements to offline and online reporting of key metrics

Requirements:

Deep working experience applying statistics and machine learning techniques to real-world data
Fluency in a scripting language such as Python or Ruby, for fast prototyping
Ability to write complex SQL queries in short order
Experience using, administering, and tuning "big data" software frameworks like Hadoop in Linux environments
Solid understanding of a wide range of open source data mining / machine learning software packages

Pluses:

Proficiency in R, Matlab, or another mathematical language
Experience modeling data and designing feature sets
Knowledge of distributed algorithms and how to analyze them
Java and/or Scala know-how
MS or PhD in a relevant discipline

Jereme Corrado is a systems architect who enjoys building clean solutions to the hard problems of scale and continually evolving dev.
Liz Crawford is the CTO @ Birchbox. She loves to hack in multiple languages and has a PhD in Artificial Intelligence.
Minor Gordon is a software architect and C++ hacker with a PhD in high-performance web servers.
Aaron Ingram is the author of Practical Oracle Security and a backend programmer specializing in databases and security.
Marie Matheson is an espresso-powered software engineer, responsible for feature development and occasional dabbling in web site beautification.
David Morrison is a product guy who is passionate about code, startups, design and sports. He loves a jog. And still hasn't found the perfect journal.

The tech team at Birchbox is responsible for maintaining and improving the company's customer-facing site (http://birchbox.com), managing hosted and cloud infrastructure, and closely supporting other teams (logistics, marketing, et al.) in our 40+-person company. We work with a wide variety of open-source technologies: Debian-based servers; Chef deployments; Ruby on Rails front ends; service interface definitions in Apache Thrift; service implementations in Scala; Python scripts and code generators; and even Perl, God forbid. The size of our team and the breadth of its responsibilities means we rely on our engineers to be self-motivated and quickly follow through on tasks without requiring close supervision. In return our engineers are given leeway to use their own initiative.
