.NET / C# - Senior Backend Systems Software Engineer in Los Angeles

ABOUT THE COMPANY:

We are a small but well capitalized firm that builds software and hardware for fixed-route bus operations. If you’ve ever seen the signs at bus stops that say “next bus in 4 min”, that’s some of what we do. The rest of it is real-time GPS tracking, transit dispatching, and reporting. You can see an example here , that’s our product in action in Downtown LA. We also build and maintain the little computer screens that the drivers use in transit buses (MDTs), as well as other transit technology products like infrared automated people counters. In short, if it has to do with technology on municipal transit buses, we’re involved in that.

We have 29 clients nationwide doing $2M+ annually. Some of them include: The City of Los Angeles (LADOT), Marin Transit, Key West Transit, University of Southern California, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, Cedars Sinai Medical Center, etc.

We are an application service provider (ASP) and offer our systems on a hosted basis exclusively to fixed-route bus-only transit operations. We run our operation on servers we build and maintain, co-located in downtown Los Angeles.

ABOUT OUR CULTURE

If you visit our offices you may be shocked – all of us work in jeans (if you interview don’t come in a suit – dress casually or you'll feel very out of place in our environment). The CEO’s dog comes to work each day. Ours is a company of engineers, and there are transit signs, fareboxes, and electronic components all over the office—“founders at work” would be a good way to describe our culture. We eat sushi together regularly, and there is a mini helicopter drone that any of us may be found flying when we need a break. This is just how we work – it’s a comfortable environment without rules or formalities that fosters creativity, productivity and independence. You will be the 6th person in a growing team that is tight-knit, effective and friendly.
Don’t be fooled though – expectations are high and we all work long hours. Our top programmer can be found sleeping at the office regularly, as can the CEO when duty calls. Weekends – we’re often there. It’s just a culture of loving what you do and putting the time and energy into it.

If this sounds like you - read on.

HOW TO APPLY

Please do NOT call. We can't manage the application process over the phone; please respect our process and follow the instructions below.

Please send your resume and answers to the following questions to apply@netdbengineer.com. You can dispense with the formal Sir or Madam cover letter; we are interested in your skills, your commitment and your experience - not the formalities. Please show us you are detail-oriented and read this entire ad: do not send us something generic. This is a demanding position with serious commitment required, and we only want serious candidates.

Please explain your experience with threaded backend applications and describe specifics of relevant projects you've worked on.
Please explain how you learned your SQL server database skills with respect to a.) schema design b.) performance analysis/lightweight DBA and c.) .NET-specific programming. Relate to us relevant real-world stories of why your skills are well-suited.
Please explain your approach to creating reliable yet also highly optimized and fast code. Be specific and avoid generalized explanations - show us your experience.
Please explain your experience with the .NET framework (C# specifically), how long you've been working with it, and what your strongest / most experienced areas are.
Please explain to us your current working situation, why you think this is a good move for you, and how you are prepared to commit yourself 100% from the start to our business (which will be partly your business as well).
Please provide a code sample written entirely by you that you think demonstrates your skills in some or all of the above.

View full job description | View company profile
