Non-technical work plan

Examine Microsoft directory service environments. Detect deficiencies or problems and provide recommendations.

Cover the following areas:
Service pack and hot fix status
Assess currently installed service packs, patches and hot fixes to
determine if there are any deficiencies.
Active Directory replication status
AD objects replicating correctly. Assess Active Directory replication and
any related issues.

DNS status
Examine aspects of DNS environment (DDNS registrations, zone transfers,
etc.) to determine if there are any issues relating to DNS.

Site topology
Assess site topology to determine if it matches physical topology for
efficient AD replications and logins.

Global Catalog distribution
Determine whether or not Global Catalogs located where they should be in
the network? Are there enough GCs, yet not too many that they create
inefficiencies? Assess and determine whether or not Global Catalog
distribution is optimal for the environment.

Schema health
Assess AD schema and determine if there are any inconsistencies within the
schema.

FSMO role distribution
Determine if FSMO roles are properly distributed in the AD environment.

Backup and recovery procedures
Assess whether or not AD is backing up, and if appropriate AD recovery
procedures in place.

Fault tolerance / High availability capacity
Assess the environment for AD fault tolerance and high availability.

Technical Work plan
The Event Viewer is always a must. Look at all the logs before and after
the update to the domain controller looking for abnormal events. With the
pre-check go back a month of logs to get more historical data. Then run
through a couple command line utilities. Pipe my commands out to a text
document. This just makes it easier to read and also search for failed
events.
Dcdiag.exe /v >> c: emppre_dcdiag.txt
This is a must and will always tell you if there is trouble with your DCs
and/or services associated with it
Netdiag.exe /v >> c: emppre_Netdiag.txt
Determine if there are issues with the networking components on the DC.
For patches, this along with the post test also is a quick easy way to
ensure the patch installed is really installed (just check the top of the
log)
Netsh dhcp show server >> c: emppre_dhcp.txt
Detect DHCP server somehow not being authorized after a patch. This
allows verification of the server count and names.
Repadmin /showreps >> c: emppre_rep_partners.txt
This shows replication and if it was successful or not. Just be aware
that Global Catalogs will have more info here than a normal domain
controller.
repadmin /replsum /errorsonly >> c: emppre_repadmin_err.txt
Takes a long time but will let you know who you are having issues
replicating with.
Run and check the pre_ scripts then update the server. When it is done
post_ scripts which are the same thing but this allows verification
against the scripts earlier.
