The Job

Scribd partners with major publishing companies like Simon & Schuster and O'reilly Media to make their books available on Scribd. To help us accelerate this process, we need a talented engineer to interface with the publishers and help them manage the process of putting their content on Scribd.

This involves working creatively on the unique challenges each publisher encounters. As an integration engineer, you will work on problems as diverse as: writing parsers to understand many book metadata formats, manipulating PDF files at a low level, and organizing and polishing publisher collections.

The Ideal Profile:

We are looking for someone who will be passionate about our mission of unlocking the world's information by putting it online. The ideal candidate wants to learn rapidly and will be unfazed by the variety of technical complications they will encounter. Both strong core programming skills and the ability to communicate effectively are essential.

We believe that existing mobile reading experiences for long-form written content do not take full advantage of the power of the new smartphones, and that we can do a better job. With our library of over 150 million articles, our mobile apps will give consumers access to more written content than any other app currently available.

We are building out a terrific mobile team with experience in both iPhone and Android platforms to create these applications. We need strong leadership from seasoned Android developers to mentor other team members who are new to the platform and architect our applications. The Job
Scribd is a top 100 site on the web and one of the very largest sites built using ruby on rails. As one of the first rails sites to reach scale, we've built a lot of infrastructure and solved a lot of challenges to get Scribd to where it is today. We actively try to push the envelope and have contributed substantial work back to the open source community.

Scribd has an agile, startup culture and an unusually close working relationship between engineering and ops. You'll regularly find cross-over work at Scribd, with ops people writing application-layer code and engineers figuring out operations-level problems. We think we're able to make that work because of the uniquely talented people we have on the team.

To allow us to keep scaling, we're now looking to add a strong, experienced operations guru to the team. As a member of Scribd operations, you'll have tremendous ownership and responsibility for one of the web's most popular applications. Because Scribd is a startup, you will wear many hats and have broader responsibility than you would at a larger company.
