Enterprise Social Computing: Got Architecture?

NewsGator Whitepaper Tackles Bedrock Architectural Questions Through the Prism of Business Benefits
DENVER, Nov. 20, 2008 — Enterprise social computing can deliver significant business value, but how you do it – the architecture – is critical to success.
NewsGator, a leader in the enterprise social computing market, tackles five key architecture considerations in a new whitepaper, “Architecting Enterprise Social Computing for Business Value.” These considerations are:
a) The individual – information about the userb) Connections among individuals – this is the core “social” partc) Content – the information created by and shared among users (from both internal and external sources)d) Events – changes in any of the abovee) Privacy & security rules – controlling who can view content or participate in communities
“Social computing in an enterprise context has more complex architectural requirements than most consumer implementations,” says Brian Kellner, NewsGator’s VP of Products. “To truly reap the business value, enterprise social computing solutions must address these requirements in a way that leverages existing technology investments, extends them where necessary, and does not swamp the IT staff. It’s a challenge but one we have extensively addressed in this whitepaper. We think it will provide clarity and insight for a lot of enterprise architects.”
The whitepaper examines social computing architecture through the prism of strategic business objectives, including improved expertise discovery, knowledge-sharing, recruiting, on-boarding, retention, collaboration and innovation. It includes notes on NewsGator Social Sites, a Facebook for the enterprise application, to illustrate how social computing can be architected using Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 as a foundation.
The free whitepaper is available on NewsGator’s website.

Migrating the Drupal way. Part II: saving those old URLs

For the second part of my migration blog, I want to touch on the importance of maintaining URLs from your old site and demonstrate some examples of how to capture them in Drupal. Search engine traffic and other referrals are invaluable when it comes to the success of a site. I've managed sites that have received upwards of 100,000 referrals a day from Google alone. This is not even to mention all of the external links and bookmarks to your pages. If you are thinking about migrating to Drupal and have not considered the importance of maintaining old URLs, you definitely should. The impact of losing that amount of traffic could be catastrophic, but luckily the solution is reasonably simple.

The Obama plan: accountability and startups with funny names

Now that we have a new president elect, everybody is asking themselves: what does the Obama administration mean for me? LogLogic is no exception and I have been asked the Obama-question by employees and reporters alike. The bottom line is that I am optimistic – the new government appears intend to focus on innovation, transparency and accountability. Of course Obama’s first order of business is the US and global economy. Many have suggested that the federal government should sponsor a “man on the moon” type program to spur technology innovation. Most recently, Google CEO and Obama technology advisor Eric Schmidt called for an “innovation bailout”, a bold government-funded effort to create jobs by rebooting America's energy infrastructure, and a reformation that restores trust in government by using technology to increase openness and civic participation. It's vital, he said, "that small startups with funny names get founded and get funded in the new regime. That's where the wealth will be created." Barack Obama's technology policy also proposes we appoint the nation's first CTO to increase transparency within government and to spur innovation and growth. From the Obama-Biden technology policy: Our nation’s progress has been stifled by a system corrupted by millions of lobbying dollars contributed to political campaigns, the revolving door between government and industry, and privileged access to inside information-all of which have led to policies that favor the few against the public interest. An Obama presidency will use cutting-edge technologies to reverse this dynamic, creating a new level of transparency, accountability and participation for America's citizens. The emphasis on bringing accountability back to the heart of our nation's capitol provides an interesting call to Silicon Valley leaders. Why? Accountability means further penetrating corporate and governmental institutions to track and trace what is really going on behind closed doors. Accountability means heightening security, stabilizing corporate governance and increasing efficiency. And, let's not forget accountability means protecting citizens and customers through unprecedented levels of openness and transparency. As a “rising star” in Silicon Valley, LogLogic – the compliance company with the funny name (really, try saying it quickly ten times) - is committed to do its part when it comes to innovation. Of course, Jon Granville, Director of Global IT and E-Commerce for the Body Shop already pointed out in my previous blog that our log management technologies help our customers achieve higher degrees of accountability and transparency. So, yes - I am optimistic.

From: LogLogic Inc.

Mobile Ad Sales and the iPhone

Everybody knows that more and more people are carrying iPhones. What most people don't think about is with that trend comes more and more advertisers looking to purchase ad space to be displayed on iPhones. It makes sense to us at Qmania.com. The more a marketing and communication channel progresses the more the traditional methods of advertising become less and less relevant for the younger generation and early adopters. Heck, that's why Qmania is here. We are here to address the needs of modern consumers and brands, in addition to their more traditionally minded counterparts. I digress.According to AdMob, the number 1 device in their ad network is now the iPhone. Let's put some numbers to that claim. From June 2008 to October 2008, AdMob's request for iPhone ad space jumped from a "modest" 28 million to a whopping 236 million. Their data also suggests that advertiser requests for iPhone ad placements more than double the combined total number of requests for all other global markets combined. It sounds like iPhone is not only growing, but so is AdMob. Once touted as the micro-industry that was well on its way to popping, due to poor timing and America's slow adoption of anything new and different, mobile ad sales continue to grow. We say good for them! Who are we kidding? Once we launch our iPhone application, we'll be giving the good people at AdMob a buzz...on our iPhones.

From: Qmania

‘The Great L.A. Pretenders’ Offers Little Inspiration To Hollywood Hopefuls

Los Angeles hipsters, wannabes, and struggling actors get viciously skewered in the new web series The Great L.A. Pretenders, a low-budget web series about the perils of L.A. fakery that has just concluded its six-episode first season. We’re introduced to "The Pretenders" by main character, sometimes narrator, Sherman (Dan Shirey), who describes himself as "the badass—a sharp, edgy, angry, sarcastic American—tired of lies," plus he’s a Muslim convert and raging alcoholic. Sherman, along with his French immigrant friend Felix (Garikayi Mutambirwa), has been hired by Mr. Adams (Gary Edward) to go under cover and infiltrate a group of yuppie wannabe actors. The reason or nature of the undercover operation is never made clear, although it’s noted that both Sherman and Felix will be paid well for their work on the project.

From: Tubefilter, Inc.
